Nebraska Accepts Fiesta Bowl Invite

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will be playing in the Fiesta Bowl versus Penn State. This marks the second consecutive trip to the Fiesta Bowl following back to back Big 12 Championships.

QB Cody Green, sidelined the last 7 weeks of the season will likely only be available in an emergency situation only.

QB Cody Green wins both the Maxwell & Davey O'Brian Awards for 2011. Green finished the season with 130-192 for 1954 passing yards and 134 rushes for 922 yards with 31 total TD's. Quite impressive, considering Green missed the last 4 regular season games and the Big 12 championship game.

#2 Florida vs. #5 Nebraska

A matchup between two top 5 ranked opponents on opening weekend is rare in college football these days. It's too bad. If this game was any indication, better quality opponents leads to better games and more excitement for college football players and fans.

Entering this season and game, the #2 gators came off an upset loss in the BCS championship breaking an OFFL-E record 24 consecutive victories. But, Florida is Florida and just reloads with talent. The Huskers entered this season coming off its best season in a decade under first year coach Wildcatter. Although the team lost a lot of senior leadership, young talent and the momentum of a program on the rise had the Huskers thinking upset.

Although both programs pride themselves on defense, it was the offenses that dominated this one. Each team moved up and down the field in the first half which ended in a 21-21 tie. The second half is where this game got interesting. Florida was able to take the second half kickoff and methodically drive down the field to take its first lead 28-21. On Nebraska's ensuing possession, the Husker offense was limited to a FG and the gators were sniffing blood.

The black shirt defense allowed Florida to drive into the redzone and many began to feel this one might be over. But, a forced fumble and a 82 yard return for a TD set the stadium rocking as Nebraska was able to regain the lead at 31-28.

In the 4th quarter, Florida was able to tie the game with a FG. Once again, the Husker offense took the field and was able to move into scoring territory late in the game. HB Okafor scored on a short TD run with just over 1 minute left to take a 38-31 lead.

But the Florida offense wouldn't go away quietly. Leading the team down the field in and ultimately scoring the game tying TD with just under 20 seconds to play.

As the momentum was sucked out of the crowd, this one appeared to be heading to overtime. On the ensuing kickoff, the gators special team committed a personal foul giving the Huskers the ball at their own 40 yard line with 12 seconds left in the game.

What happened from here was just unbelievable. QB Cody Green hit WR Cooper for a 23 yard reception and the huskers were able to call a timeout with 3 seconds left to play.

Coach Wildcatter called upon Kicker Kunalic to attempt the 56 yarder. After coach Basis called a timeout to ice the kicker, Kunalic made the kick of his career as time expired.

Nebraska rushed for three touchdowns, quarterback Zach Lee threw for two more and the Huskers captured their first Big 12 championship under Coach Wildcatter and second conference championship overall since 1999, upending the Sooners 35-30 Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

QB Zach Lee Dominates Nebraska Record Books

Zach Lee has earned his way into the Nebraska single season record book for passing yards and touchdowns. With 36 touchdown passes on the season, he has officially passed the previously held record of 25 touchdowns by Zac Taylor in 2005. He has also eclipsed the single season passing yards record of Joe Ganz with 4,310 yards.

For his career, Zach now owns the Nebraska records for passing TD's (53) and passing yards (6,573)

Holding all four passing records at Nebraska simply makes Lee the most prolific passer in the Nebraska program history.

Huskers Win Big 12 North Division

Nebraska has won the Big 12 North Division in 2010 under first year head coach Wildcatter. Nebraska went 8-0 in conference play. Remarkably, Nebraska combined winning score over their North division rivals Colorado and Missouri was 99-0.

Nebraska is set to face Oklahoma for the Big 12 Championship. Both teams are ranked in the BCS top ten and look to renew this rivalry that once dominated the landscape of college football.

Huskers Dominate Buffaloes, Extend Win Streak to 9

44-0! That's right folks. What was built up as the biggest game in the Big 12 North in years turned into a one sided affair.

The Colorado team had great headlines: undefeated and ranked #3 in the BCS, Heisman contender in Darrel Scott & big win over Oklahoma. All of this lead into one final showdown. Win and you stay undefeated, play for the Big 12 Championship and maybe even the National championship.

But to lose 44-0 changes the direction the program has been building to all year. Colorado will finish a very respectable regular season at 11-1 but with the terrible performance in the loss will more than likely not have a chance to play in a BCS bowl.

Offense Leads Way in Victory

Nebraska earned a tough road victory over Texas A&M 48-27 lead by the arm of senior QB Zach Lee. The Huskers are now 9-1 (7-0) on the season.

Week 12 is a bye week followed by a rivalry showdown versus undefeated Colorado. The winner of this game will win the north division and play for the Big 12 Championship.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers recorded it's first shutout of the season against Big 12 North rival Missouri Tigers 45-0.

The Nebraska-Missouri rivalry dates back to November 5, 1892 and the two teams have battled 103 times in the series with Nebraska leading 64-36-3. This is the first shutout in the series since 1995.

Nebraska moves to (8-1) and the schedule will get more difficult as they face the first place team in the South Division followed by the first place team in the North Division in consecutive weeks. Nebraska continues to control it's own destiny in earning an invite to the Big 12 championship game.

Nebraska Shocks Texas 38-3

A dominant defense and a ball control, efficient offense lead to a big upset.

Before kickoff, all signs pointed to a Texas victory. But Coach Wildcatter was confident in his game plan and, more importantly, had his team ready to play. Add in a little home team luck, and it was a recipe for disaster for the Longhorns.

After quickly moving the ball into scoring territory off the opening kickoff, starting QB, Sherrod Harris was knocked out of the game for two quarters due to injury. With a backup QB, Texas was not able to convert the possession to any points as Coach Mack Brown made a questionable decision to go for it on 4th down rather than take a FG attempt. The Nebraska offense took advantage of the defensive stop and turned its initial possession into a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, the Texas offense again drove down the field into the Nebraska redzone. On 4th and goal from the Nebraska 1 yard line, Texas again deciding to go for it and failed on a pass attempt into the endzone. With the momentum back on the home team side, the Husker offense put together its best offensive possession of the season going 99 yards on 16 plays over 4 minutes to take a 14-0 lead.

Again, the Texas offense sputtered turning it over on a fumble leading to a 12 play 63 yard scoring possession for Nebraska taking a 21-0 lead at the end of the second quarter. At half, the Texas offense had 3 possessions, 0 punts, 1 turnover and 2 failed 4th down attempts.

With the home crowd rocking and complete control of the momentum, Nebraska was able to dominate the second half of play with an attacking defense and an offense that was unstoppable on the afternoon. Nebraska finished the game 11-12 on 3rd down conversions which lead to long offensive drives and limiting the scoring opportunities for Texas. When the final whistle blew, the Huskers had earned a 38-3 victory.

This game was ugly, really ugly.

The Nebraska coaches came into the game fearing the Buckeye defense.  A conservative gameplan was drawn up hoping to get a close game into the 4th quarter to have a chance for the win in Columbus.

However, the Buckeye defense quickly squashed that plan as they dominated the line of scrimmage and continously tackled the Nebraska running backs behind the line of scrimmage.  The Nebraska rushing attack was held to (30) yards on 27 carries. The longest run on the day was 5 yards late in the second half.

But, the Nebraska passing attack was outstanding and bailed the offense out all afternoon. The Nebraska QB's finished the game 24-34 for 414 yards and 3 TD's.

While the Buckeye defense is for real, the offense and special teams have really let this team down. Ohio State had to settle for 5 field goal attempts and only made 2. Of the 2 that were made, both needed help from the goal post to make it through the up rights.

Nebraska moves to 2-1 and Ohio State is now 1-3 on the season.

Nebraska Struggles in 48-34 Win

The 2010 Nebraska Cornhuskers squared off against the Rice Owls in Lincoln, Nebraska at Memorial Field on Saturday. The excitement of a new coaching era has been the buzz all offseason. That excitement quickly turned into the realization that the program has a long way to go before returning to the head of the table of college football royalty.

Nebraska managed a 48-34 victory over Rice and it was a struggle for the Huskers throughout. The offense showed signs of being explosive, but was plagued by 5 turnovers (2 fumbles, 3 interceptions) that kept Rice in the game through the 4th quarter. Coach Wildcatter was most upset with his defense which gave up 34 points and could not stop the Rice passing attack.

Nebraska has claimed 46 conference championships and part or all of five national championships: 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997. The titles in the 1990s marked the first time since Notre Dame in 1946–49 when a team won three national championships in four seasons. The 1994 and 1995 seasons still stand as the only consensus back-to-back national titles by any Division 1-A school since Oklahoma in 1956-57. Nebraska posted a 60–3–0 record between the 1993-97 seasons. ESPN.com has named the 1971 Nebraska Cornhusker team the greatest team of all time.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers also have five undefeated seasons that they were not the national champions; 1902, 1903, 1913, 1914, and 1915. Between 1912 and 1916, a 34 game win streak was recorded by then head coach Ewald O. Stiehm.

Husker football began play in 1890, with a 10–0 victory over the Omaha YMCA on Thanksgiving Day, November 27.

During the early years of the program, the team had a number of nicknames: "Bugeaters", "Tree Planters", "Nebraskans", "The Rattlesnake Boys", "Antelopes", "Old Gold Knights" and Cornhuskers".

The name Cornhuskers first appeared in the school newspaper as "We Have Met The Cornhuskers And They Are Ours" refering to a 20–18 upset victory over Iowa in 1893. The name would be used again, this time to refer to Nebraska by Charles "Cy" Sherman in The Nebraska State Journal during the 1899 season and would replace all other names by 1900.

Wildcatter78 will be the next Nebraska head coach, Tradition News has confirmed.

The news is the culmination of a search that took Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne less than two weeks to complete.

The passion Wildcatter possesses will earn raves. But it's his job to take Nebraska to the heights it enjoyed in the 1990s, when the school won three national titles under the man who hired Wildcatter.
